Island Care Code
To keep the place tidy and nice, please take food wrappers and empty drink containers
back to the mainland for disposal.
Resist the temptation to ‘souvenir’ anything
whatsoever, including rocks and plants. Photographs of course, are an ideal way to remember
your visit.
Keeping to the tracks will ensure plants are not trampled or
damaged. Kiwi often use the walking tracks at night and sleep
in the grass or below trees just off the tracks during the day.
So keeping to the tracks reduces the risk of tramping on a kiwi
too!
Please think of the needs of shore birds while on the island.
Disturbing them while they are resting or feeding may result
in them flying off and not returning to the island as frequently
as they might. Birds become even more stressed if disturbed
during the breeding season. This is late Spring through summer.
The sandspit is reserved for birds only, so please do not venture
into that area (see Island Map). The
derelict barge below the Manager’s house ruins is also
taped off – an important bird breeding area for oyster
catcher and the rare NZ dotterel.
