The island restoration programme was started in the 1980s by a small group of Forest & Bird members who had a vision of the island covered by native New Zealand coastal forest, full of native birds, lizards and insects, and open for the public to enjoy.
The island is owned by the Whangarei District Council, gazetted as a scenic reserve and, by agreement, managed by the Friends of Matakohe-Limestone Island Society. The restoration has been underway since the 1980s driven by local community volunteers.
Since 1998, the support given by our major sponsor, Golden Bay Cement, has enormously sped up the achievement of the goals set for the island.
Membership of FOMLI is open to the public.
The Annual General Meeting is held in February each year, with the management committee meeting monthly (third Wednesday).
